Rules for Card Game Pinochle

The deck

A deck used for Pinochle contains 48 cards in total. For every one of the four types of suits, you will find two copies each of these six ranks: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, Ten and Nine.

These cards, they do not have the usual order of importance. Ace has the highest value, then comes 10 and after that K.

People usually call them counters. These cards have value in points every time. We will describe different ways to give scores later in the part about scoring, and these ways may count Q, J, 9 as having point values or as not having any points at all.

When the value of these cards is zero points, people call them noncounters. Before starting to deal and play, everyone must agree on how they will score.

The deal

Players can select a dealer by any method they prefer. Afterwards, the chosen one mixes up all of the cards well and gives out 12 to every player, handing them over in groups of either 3 or 4 at once. 

The arrangement begins to the left side of the one who deals and goes around in a clock direction, finishing when they take their own cards.

After every player receives their cards, they look at them closely and get ready for the part where we bid or auction.

When there is no bidding and after dealing the cards, the dealer turns over the first card from the deck. This card is laid on the table with its face visible to everyone.

The suit of this revealed card becomes more powerful than any other suits. So, if you have cards from this trump suit, they can win over all others suits’ cards. 

High-level trump cards win against other trumps. The rest of the card deck is put face down on the table, serving as the draw pile.

The auction

A bid is like a guess of how many points you think your cards can get. The person who guesses the highest, or wins this guessing part, gets some benefits:

  • declare trump suit
  • receive cards from their partner
  • lead the first trick

Players have to bid at least 250 points. Each time a bid goes up, it must be by 10 times and use only numbers.

The bidding moves in a circle along the table until everyone decides to pass, and then we say who has won. From the dealer’s left side, going in the direction of the clock, people playing can choose from these options when they bid:

  • bid normally by bidding 10 points higher than the previous bid
  • give a jump bid, and bid 20 points higher than the previous bid
  • pass and leave the bidding
  • pass with assistance, meaning that while you successfully pass the item to your teammate, you also provide them with additional details or advice.

After the winner emerges, they announce the trump suit.

Passing Cards

The one who wins the bid and their playing companion are allowed to swap cards between them.

The partner of the winner must choose four specific cards to give to their teammate. The person who won the auction takes those four cards into their hand to look at them. 

Then, they choose four cards to return to their teammate; this might mean giving back some of the same cards they just got.

Melding

If the declarer is more than 250 points below their bid after melding, they can choose to give up and not play in the trick-taking part of the game because there are only a total of 250 points that one can get during this phase.

If their offer is less than or equal to 250 points following the combining, they can proceed with playing their cards in the phase of collecting tricks.

Trick-taking

Once the melds receive their points, players take back their cards to begin the part of the game where they win tricks.

The person who declared starts by playing a card of their choice for the first trick. To win a trick, you play the highest trump card if there are trumps, or otherwise, the highest card of the same suit that was started. 

Each player must put down one card during a trick. The game goes on until twelve tricks are completed. The person who wins a trick starts the next one. Trick-taking follows the rules below:

If it is possible for you to match the leading suit, then you are required to do so. You must play a card that has the same suit as the one led if such a card is in your possession. Play a higher ranking card than the lead if possible.

If you cannot play a card of the same suit, and you have one from the trump suit, then that is the card you should use. This action is known as trumping the trick. When the leading suit is a trump, respond with a higher trump card if you can.

If you cannot continue with the same suit or play a higher card, then you are allowed to put down any other card.

Every team must choose one player to be the puller. This person will gather the cards from successful tricks into a pile that is faced down in front of them, so they can count points when it’s time later in the game.

Scoring 

Once all twelve tricks have been completed, the players tally up their points from the cards they have gathered. Aces, tens and kings each carry a value of ten points.

Gaining the last trick also earns you 10 points, making a sum of 250 points that participants can accumulate throughout the play of tricks.

When the player meets or goes beyond their promised bid, they add together all points from melds and tricks to their ongoing score.

But if they fail to reach this bid, then the number of points they said becomes deducted from what has been collected so far in the game.

When the declarers “throw in,” their opponents count their melds. No points for tricks are given because no tricks happen. The declarer loses the amount they bid.

The game goes on until one team gets more than 1500 points. If both teams reach 1500 points at the same time, then the team of the person who declared wins by default.
